Never a good time to be under the weather...
Does anyone else get emotional when sick too? Or just me?

Chocolate for Dinner
So tired, I'm cross-eyed. No new cartoon, but here's one from a year ago, recolored.
Appropriate because, sometimes, chocolate for dinner is absolutely necessary.

A Status Message a Day #87
Today I have nothing to say that hasn't already been said. But here's an elephant.
Elephant goes for a walk. Contemplates life. Remembers nothing. |

A Status Message a Day #86
I don't know how other people with more responsibilities, harder jobs, and families to feed do it. Because I'm POOPED.
The good news is drawing it out actually did help my bad mood bears :)

Hustling Hamster
I feel you, hamster. I feel you.
It is officially the busiest time of year. Today's cartoon almost didn't happen, but I scribbled it out at the last minute. I'm embarrassed by my inability to draw a hamster wheel and it's obvious where I gave up. Today, it'll just have to do!

A Status Message a Day #84
This is a page from my sketchbook from this weekend. My notes, if illegible, read:
"3 Train to Brooklyn, April 15, 2012. A panhandler came through our car and this man was the only one who dug into his jeans to give him some change."

Motherly Straight Talk
This comic is in honor of my mother, who is prettier than she appears in cartoons. Happy birthday, Mom, and thanks for all the mothering!

Astounding Pomposity
My scanner at home went kaput today :(
Didn't get to scan or properly finish my comic, but here's a picture taken on my phone with a nifty free app called Genius Scan. While it's not printer scan quality, I'm impressed by what it can do.
This cartoon is a process piece all the way, but on busy days with technical difficulties, it'll have to do!

A Status Message a Day #83
This is an older sketch that I colored and repurposed to contain a recent revelation...and today's status message. Happy Friday!

Rat Boycotts #SquirrelWeek
This cartoon was inspired by a midday walk in the park. But apparently, it's also #SquirrelWeek in DC.
In response to this story by John Kelly in the Washington Post, readers have been sending in pictures of neighborhood squirrels.

Blast from the Past #2
Busy season at work is in full swing. Feeling my age and already tired. But I do have great friends :)
No new cartoon today, but here's an oldie. This was the first time I doodled a sequential comic back in 2010, when I first started thinking about the possibilities of panel-to-panel transitions in my own work.
This may look like just a quick doodle - but it was a revelation for me!
If you're a fan of Scott McCloud's seminal work on Understanding Comics, see if you can identify the type of panel-to-panel transition I'm using here :)

McCloud's books are essential reading for the comic-making soul.

A Status Message a Day #81
I was disappointed that yesterday's cartoon kind of flopped and the joke didn't really work. But then, I saw an old friend and she gifted me these words, after I told her I'm cartooning daily.
It was the nicest thing I've ever heard. (Thanks, Pat!)

How to Get Some Guy to Marry You
Hamilton Nolan recently wrote a hilarious piece for Gawker.com that was begging to be cartooned. I finally got to it and here it is.
Please note that this comic was inspired by the article and created independently with the author's permission. Be sure to check out the original article!

Blast from the Past #1
I'm working on a longer piece which I will ink and post later today or tomorrow.
For now, here's a page from my 1997 sketchbook when I was still drawing on newsprint...with crayons. Literally. I am forever indebted to my hometown friend, Yasmina Lee, for getting me my first real sketchbook with unlined, acid-free paper.
This was drawn from a photo in Life Magazine taken at the London Zoo. No date or credit, but I scrawled the caption in the corner: "Open wide...now say ahh..."I thought it was the funniest thing I ever saw.

Friends with Unicorns
I realize that I am complicit in this dynamic, but come on - we all
know that single ladies do not have it easy in Manhattan. So if you have any single unicorn friends, help a gal out!

A Status Message a Day #80
I was working all weekend, but here's a very quick cartoon for your Monday. This is inspired by a quote by Teller of magician duo Penn and Teller (via @brainpickings, as seen on exp.lore.com, via bobulate.com, via casnocha.com, h/t Kevin Burke). Whew, I think that's everybody. Full quote here
I talk to myself a lot.
