Several years ago at a family dinner, my nephew mentioned he was dating someone new. The first words out of my father's mouth; "Is she white? Is she Jewish?" My nephew had the good sense to ignore the racist question. Later, I thought he should have said, "She's a black Jew", then taken two steps back and watch my father's head explode.
My spouse is from Spain. When I announced our engagement, my father said, "I dunno about those Latins." I replied, "He's not Latin American, he's European. And I'm not asking you for permission, I'm inviting you to the wedding." They were sure it wouldn't work. Then they met him. They loved him. More, it sometimes seemed, than they loved me. We've been married for 34 years. We are still married; which is more than I can say for half of my siblings. Yeah, it works.
