These are based on real dogs at the climbing gym I go to and drawn from memory. I think I do this with people too. I'm social, but I have a very careful approach.

You're wise to be wary around strange dogs. You have no idea if they've been properly socialised or not, and many have not and will bite when least expected. I love dogs, but you can't just walk up to one that doesn't know you and expect to pet them unscathed.
If you really want a dog to love you unconditionally, adopt one. And make sure you socialise it and give it basic obedience training. The five basic commands, "Come/Sit/Stay/Down/Leave That!" will take you a long way.
