On My Way

New diary comic about finding self-affirmation in less than ideal conditions.

  • George Takei on the long history of anti-Asian hate in the US (link)
  • Daniel Dae Kim speaking to Congress (link)
  • Karen Chee on the Atlanta shootings (link)

I have to learn the importance of loving myself no matter what external messages I get from my environment.

Sandra Oh famously said, "It's an honor to be Asian."

Yes, and now more than ever. Glad to know we are not alone.

Here in Spain a lot of my highschool age friends wish they were Asian. Boys as well as girls say Asians are beautiful.

And I agree. I studied Romance languages (Spanish, French and Italian). At 60 in 3 months' time, I don't think I could manage Japanese or Korean--and Chinese tonals are beyond my aging ears. Not that I could handle them in my teens, because I couldn't! I can't "hear" Chinese at all--by which I mean, distinguish where one word ends and the next starts. Mind you, I couldn't manage Russian when I was 17, and I gave it a couple of months--but I couldn't learn to read.
